Is Bankruptcy A Burdensome Cost To Society?
There has long been an argument that bankruptcy places a severe cost on our society so the rules should be toughened to make it harder for individuals to file for bankruptcy. There is no dispute that bankruptcy does cost our economy a lot of money, particularly when times are tough and bankruptcy numbers skyrocket. However, to state that it is a burdensome cost may be taking it a little too far.
If bankruptcy is an option that you are seriously considering, then you must be in need of it. It’s not like the consumer is at fault when an economy turns sour, yet they are the ones who bear the brunt of its effect. When it comes credit, particularly credit cards, providers rarely go bankrupt themselves because of bankruptcy.
We do all pay for bankruptcy. In fact, higher than normal bankruptcy petitions is one excuse used by lenders for high interest costs and annual fees. As a borrower, you need to remember that lenders factor in a certain percentage of defaulters – that’s how they determine their costs, and how they work out what sort of interest rate and fee structure they will have.
Where bankruptcy does affect the economy is in situations where small businesses lose out. However, in most cases these businesses suffer either through a drop in sales because of a poor economy or because other businesses have gone bankrupt and not paid out their accounts. Small businesses are rarely affected by personal bankruptcy, and when it is it is generally only in small dollar amounts.
If you are in financial trouble, don’t let arguments like this sway you away from bankruptcy. Legislators put the bankruptcy act together in an attempt to provide as much protection as possible to everyone while also providing some form of relief for those in financial difficulties. Credit providers do very well out of their business and have already factored in that you may be forced to enter into bankruptcy. If you need financial relief, then use what is legally available to you – it’s certainly not a burden on the economy, the economy has already planned for it.
